Sometimes, it’s the silence afterwards. The careful way you move around each other in the kitchen, the deliberate focus on tidying up, anything to avoid eye contact. There’s a heavy, exhausted feeling in the air. A sense of, “Here we go again.” You might even be able to predict the script. You know the phrase that will trigger it, the look that will follow, and the way it will end – with both of you retreating to separate corners, feeling misunderstood and resentful. It's a deeply frustrating place to be. You’ve both tried to stop it. You’ve promised to be calmer, to listen more, to not “rise to the bait”. And for a while, maybe it works. But then, under pressure after a long commute back to Epsom or Woking, the old pattern re-emerges, and you feel hopeless all over again. #### Why Can’t We Just Stop It? What I've seen in my work with couples across Surrey is that these [recurring arguments](https://relationshipcounsellingsurrey.co.uk/blog/why-couples-feel-stuck-in-the-same-arguments) are rarely about the topic you’re fighting about. The overflowing bin or who was supposed to call the bank isn't the real issue. The real issue is the pattern itself – a kind of unconscious dance you’ve both learned. Often, one person’s way of coping accidentally triggers the other’s. For instance, one of you might seek connection by pointing out a problem, hoping to solve it together. But to your partner, this can sound like criticism, so they withdraw to keep the peace. This withdrawal then makes the first person feel abandoned and unheard, so they pursue more insistently… and so the cycle goes. Breaking relationship patterns is incredibly difficult from the inside because you can only see your own steps. You see your own good intentions – “I was just trying to help!” – and your partner’s frustrating reaction.
