You’ve replayed the conversation in your head. You know exactly what you want to say, the words you’ll use, the tone you’ll take. You wait for the right moment, maybe when you’re clearing up after dinner or just before you turn the lights out. And then you begin. But as you speak, you see it. The flicker of distraction in their eyes, the slight turn of their body away from you, the barely audible sigh. Or maybe there’s just… nothing. A blankness that tells you the conversation is already over before it’s truly begun. So you stop. The rest of the words die in your throat. What’s the point? That heavy, familiar feeling of being completely unheard settles in the space between you. It’s a silence that feels more isolating than any shouting match.
