    Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our services, booking process, and what to expect from therapy.

    Getting Started

Your first session is an opportunity to meet your therapist and talk about what has brought you to counselling. You will both have the chance to explain your concerns and what you would like to improve in your relationship. Your therapist will ensure both perspectives are heard and guide the conversation in a constructive way.

Many couples seek counselling when communication becomes difficult, trust has been affected, or the same arguments keep repeating. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit. Counselling simply provides a calm, structured space to talk things through and understand each other better.

Couples counselling can be very helpful, but what "working" looks like is different for every couple. For some couples, counselling helps improve communication, rebuild trust and strengthen the relationship. For others, it helps them understand each other better and decide how they want to move forward. In some situations, counselling helps couples separate more amicably.

In most cases couples attend sessions together so both perspectives can be explored. However, if one partner is unsure about counselling, you are still welcome to begin by attending on your own.

There is no fixed number of sessions. Some couples attend for a short period to resolve a specific issue, while others choose longer-term support to rebuild trust or improve communication. The aim is to help you get to where you want to be as quickly and effectively as possible. Sessions are booked one at a time, so there is no requirement to commit to a set number in advance.

No. You can book sessions as often as feels helpful for you. Some couples choose weekly sessions, while others prefer to leave more time between appointments. Sessions are booked individually, with no commitment to continue for a set number of sessions.

You do not need to have decided the future of your relationship before attending counselling. Your therapist can help you both explore your thoughts and feelings, understand what has brought you to this point and consider what you each want. The purpose is not to persuade you to stay together or separate, but to help you reach greater clarity.

    Choosing a Counsellor

All of our therapists are fully qualified and experienced in working with couples. You can read each therapist's profile and watch their introduction video to find someone whose approach feels right for you.

Our therapists are professionally qualified and experienced in relationship work. Qualifications, specialist training, professional-body membership, registration and accreditation vary between therapists and are shown on each therapist's profile.

Finding the right therapist is important, and not every therapist will be the right fit for every couple. If something does not feel quite right, you are not tied to one counsellor. Please contact us and we will help you explore alternative options.

Free introductory calls are not currently offered. Therapist profiles and introduction videos are provided to help you choose. Sessions are booked one at a time, so there is no requirement to commit to further appointments if you decide the therapist is not the right fit.

    Face-to-Face & Online Counselling

Research suggests online psychological and relationship therapy can be effective for many people. Suitability and outcomes depend on the couple, their circumstances, the therapeutic approach, privacy and the nature of the difficulties being addressed. Some couples prefer meeting their therapist in person, while others find it easier to speak from their own home. Both formats aim to provide a structured space to explore what is happening in your relationship.

If you choose online sessions, you simply need a stable internet connection, a computer, tablet or smartphone, and a quiet private space. Online appointments take place via secure video link and are easy to join.

Yes. Many couples attend from different locations, particularly if they live apart or are travelling. As long as you both have a private space and internet access, you can join the same session from different places.

Technical problems are rare, but if they occur your therapist will help you reconnect as quickly as possible. If the connection cannot be restored, your therapist may continue the session by phone or rearrange the appointment if necessary.

    Cost & Booking

Each session lasts a full 60 minutes. Couples sessions are £80 and individual sessions are £68. The fee is the same whether you meet your therapist face to face at one of our Surrey practices or online by secure video — we do not charge more for either format. Sessions are booked and paid for one at a time, so there is no requirement to commit to multiple appointments.

Booking is quick and straightforward. Simply click the "Book Online Now" button to access our secure online booking system. You can view availability, choose a therapist, and select a time that works for you.

Payment is made securely online at the time of booking using a debit or credit card. Once your session is booked, you will receive a confirmation email with your therapist's details, including the full practice address for face-to-face sessions or the secure video link for online appointments.

Yes, you can cancel or reschedule your session provided you give at least 24 hours' notice. If less than 24 hours' notice is given, the session fee is charged in full as the appointment time has been reserved specifically for you.

Yes. You do not need to attend at the same time every week. You can view your therapist's current availability and book the date and time that suits you, subject to availability. Each session is booked separately, so you are not committed to a regular weekly appointment.

    Confidentiality & Privacy

Yes. All sessions are confidential and follow professional ethical guidelines. Confidentiality would only be broken if your therapist believed there was a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, or if there was a legal obligation to disclose information.

Your personal information is used only for communication related to your enquiry, therapy sessions and bookings. All personal data is handled in accordance with confidentiality and data protection obligations.

If you have a concern about your booking, payment or the service provided by Relationship Counselling Surrey, please contact us directly and we will look into it promptly. If your concern relates to the therapy itself, we would usually encourage you to raise this first with your therapist. They are self-employed professionals and responsible for their own clinical practice. If you feel unable to do this, or if the issue remains unresolved, you are welcome to contact us and we will advise you on the appropriate next steps.
