More Than a Wedding: Planning Your Marriage

The spreadsheet is a work of art. You’ve got caterers, venues, and florists lined up. You’ve even argued playfully over the first dance song. Planning a wedding in Surrey, with all its beautiful options, is a project you’ve tackled as a team. And yet…
Sometimes, in a quiet moment when the planning is done for the day, a different thought surfaces. It’s not a doubt about your love, not really. It’s a smaller, harder-to-define question about the ‘after’. After the confetti has settled, after the thank you cards are sent, what happens then?
This feeling is incredibly common. It’s a mix of huge excitement and a little bit of low-level apprehension. Acknowledging it isn't a red flag; I think it’s a sign that you both take the commitment of marriage seriously. You’re not just planning a party; you’re planning a life.
The Quiet 'What Ifs'
So much of your energy is focused on Day One of your marriage, but what about Day 100, or Day 1000? Often, the things that worry couples are the topics that feel too awkward or too small to bring up amidst the excitement of wedding plans.
Maybe you’ve noticed you have completely different attitudes to money, but it’s never seemed like a big deal until now. Perhaps one of you is a meticulous saver and the other believes money is there to be enjoyed. How do you merge those two perspectives when you’re building a future together?
Or what about family? You love your in-laws, but the thought of navigating expectations around Christmas or future grandchildren feels a bit fuzzy. These aren't problems yet, but they are unanswered questions that can grow into sources of tension if left unspoken.
Building a Foundation, Not Just a Guest List
The skills that make you brilliant at planning a wedding – communication, compromise, budgeting, teamwork – are the very same skills needed for a strong marriage. The difference is that the wedding has a deadline, whereas marriage is an ongoing process.
This is where pre-marital counselling comes in. And I want to be clear: it’s not because something is wrong. Far from it. I see it as the single most positive and proactive step a couple can take before they get married.
It’s about carving out a bit of time, away from the stress of place settings and playlists, to intentionally focus on your relationship. It’s an opportunity to have the important conversations now, in a calm and supportive environment, rather than later, in the heat of a disagreement.
What Does Pre-Marital Counselling Actually Involve?
Couples often arrive for their first session feeling a little nervous, unsure what to expect. They sometimes worry it will be about digging up problems. But in my experience, it’s mostly about building strengths. It’s a space to get on the same page and align your relationship goals.
In our sessions, we might explore:
- Shared Values: What really matters to you both, individually and as a couple? How will you make big life decisions in the future?
- Communication Styles: Learning how to truly hear each other, especially when you disagree. How can you argue constructively without causing hurt?
- Expectations: Talking openly about your hopes for your future together, from careers and finances to family and intimacy. Sometimes just voicing these expectations is a huge relief.
- Conflict Toolkit: Every couple has disagreements. We work on developing a shared toolkit for navigating those moments so they bring you closer instead of pushing you apart.
Think of it as drawing a map for your future together. You don’t know what the terrain will be like, but you have a compass and you know how to read it as a team. Some couples who come to see us in Guildford and Woking are dealing with the pressures of demanding careers and a fast-paced life. They find that simply having a scheduled hour to focus only on their relationship is incredibly grounding.
Turning Jitters into Confidence
Those pre-wedding jitters are often just vague anxieties without a name. The process of pre-marital counselling helps to turn those undefined worries into practical, solvable conversations. The fear of the unknown is replaced by the confidence of a shared plan.
You learn to see your differences not as potential fault lines, but as part of the unique dynamic that makes you, you. You start your marriage feeling like a solid team, equipped and ready for whatever comes next.
Making that first step can feel like the hardest part, especially when you're busy. Many couples put off that initial search for 'couple counselling near me' in Surrey because life gets in the way. But investing just a few hours in your relationship before your wedding is one of the most valuable gifts you can give to your future selves.
If you’re engaged or thinking about the next step, and you’d like to start your marriage with the strongest possible foundation, we’re here to help. We offer sessions both online and face-to-face across Surrey. The process is straightforward; sessions are booked one at a time, so there’s no long-term commitment. Our fee is £80 per couple for a full hour session.
Please get in touch to book an initial session. It’s a chance for you to see how it works and for us to answer any questions you might have.
