What to Expect – Taking The First Step

 

At Relationship Counselling Surrey, our experienced couples counsellors have helped hundreds of couples create positive change.

We understand that deciding to seek help can feel daunting, especially if one of you is unsure about counselling. But rest assured, couples counselling is a positive and supportive experience, not a judgmental one.

Our counsellors are not here to decide who’s right or wrong. Instead, they’ll help you both explore what’s happening in your relationship, encourage open communication, and support you in finding the outcome that feels right for you – even if you’re not sure what that is yet.


How We Work With You

Many couples tell us they feel at ease very quickly. That’s because our counsellors create a calm, welcoming space where you can both talk openly and be heard.

Your counsellor will guide the conversation, ask thoughtful questions, and help you see things from each other’s perspective. They’ll take an active part in helping you understand one another and move towards positive change.


During Your Sessions

You’ll be in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment where:

  • You’ll both be asked what you hope to gain from counselling – whether that’s rebuilding your relationship, ending it respectfully, or simply gaining clarity about the future.

  • Each of you will have the opportunity to share what feels difficult and when problems began. Your counsellor may ask for examples to help you both understand each other’s experiences.

  • As sessions progress, you’ll both be encouraged to listen more deeply and see the bigger picture of what’s really happening between you.

  • You’ll learn ways to communicate more clearly, manage emotions, and set healthy boundaries.

  • You’ll explore your differences and what really matters to each of you, finding compromises that feel fair and balanced.

  • If you both want to rebuild closeness, your sessions will also focus on restoring intimacy and a sense of connection.


After Your Sessions

As your counselling comes to an end, your therapist will help you create a plan for keeping things on track. You’ll always have the option to book a follow-up or “maintenance” session whenever you feel it would be helpful.

Even after just one session, many couples say they feel a huge sense of relief – that something positive is finally being done to bring about change.
