Couple Therapy Surbiton

Hello, my name is Jolanta Lovelock and I am a fully qualified Integrative Counsellor experienced in working with individuals and couples. I’m a registered member of BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and hold a professional qualification in Psychology. I also have a further education PGCE and an MA in Special Educational Needs.

I’m experienced in working with individual and couples from diverse social, cultural and religious backgrounds along with LGBTQIA+, neurodiverse individuals (ADHD, autism, dyslexia and dyspraxia) and clients with minor learning and/or physical disabilities.

My core area of expertise lies in relationship therapy ,and as an Integrative Counsellor I draw upon a wide range of therapeutic modalities, which is dependent on your specific needs and problems you bring into therapy.  During my therapy sessions, I use some elements of the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Person- Centred therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Gestalt and Mindfulness. I also use techniques derived from EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy), Imago Relational Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy, when working with couples.

My approach to couple counselling

During both couple and one-to-one sessions, we will explore your thoughts, feelings, needs and patterns of behaviour. We will also look at childhood and life experiences, early attachments, previous relationships, your core values, love languages and also any significant events in your life that have contributed to your problems in relationship such as bereavement, illness, infertility and many others. This will help you understand your communication styles and any unhelpful patterns of behaviour that have developed over time, which might be causing problems in your relationship.

If you are looking for help in improving and strengthening your relationship, then I will encourage you both to actively participate in the therapy, by being transparent, open minded and ready to learn new skills, so that the therapy is most effective for you.

Perhaps you are contemplating bringing your relationship to an end and you are looking for help in how to separate amicably, especially if there are children or assets involved, I can also help you through that process.

I provide therapy sessions in both English and/or Polish.

I am DBS checked and hold Professional Indemnity Insurance.

Ethical Standards

As a registered member of BACP I adhere to their ethical guidelines, ongoing supervision and CPD (continual professional development) to ensure the service I provide the best possible service to my clients.

 Background/experience

I was born in Poland but have lived in the UK for the majority of my life. I’ve been married for 30 years to an Irish-English man and have one grown up daughter (and two cats!) As far as can I remember I have also been interested in people and the workings of the mind, body and spirit.

I completed an MA in Special Educational Needs in Poland and my teaching qualifications. Along with my post-graduate diplomas in Psychology and Counselling in the UK. Over a 25-year period I worked as a qualified teacher, personal tutor, learning mentor/coach and with young people, families and adults. I also had this the opportunity to work with people from families diverse social, cultural and religious background, alongside members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Since qualifying as a therapist, I have been working as a counsellor at Kingston Women’s Centre, Kingston University and then as a partner counsellor at the BodyMind Centre in Weybridge and at Surbiton Counselling Partnership. I have also been running my own private therapy practice for the last few years.

How I can help you

  • I will help you gain a better understanding of yourself and each other’s thoughts, feelings and needs. Alongside this, we will look at both of your core values, attachment styles, love languages and life and relationship goals.
  • My role as a couple counsellor is not to “fix” you, your partner or your relational issues. Instead, I will be there to guide and support you during the relationship counselling process. My aim is to help you improve communication to better understand each other, on a much deeper level. We will work together, to try and resolve the issues in your relationship. That way, you can move forward more positively – in whichever way you choose.
  • There might be times, that I need to gently challenge you both to think about how your individual behaviour might be negatively impacting your relationship. This is an essential part of the therapy process.
  • I will guide you towards making the required changes in order for your relationship to be happier for you both. Although I will be there for you every step of the way, you will be you doing the essential work.  Therefore your commitment to the therapy will be vital.
  • I work in relational way. Which means drawing attention to what is happening in the here-and-now. So it’s important  you both feel safe and comfortable working with me. Therefore, I will endeavour to demonstrate care, empathy and respect. I’m not there to judge or take sides because it’s not about who is right and wrong. Instead, it is about gaining understanding of each other’s perspectives so you can move forward.
